For
a decade now, the motto of Calvary Bible Church has been
“Changed Lives, Changing Lives!” The motto may be
relatively new, but ever since Calvary’s birth, back in
the 60’s (then called Calvary Independent Baptist
Church), the mission of the church has always been the
same – to seek and save those who are lost!
Originally Baptist by denomination,
Calvary was birthed by Pastor Gene Corbett, and from the
1960’s until 1994 was led by pastors connected to the
General Association of Regular Baptists.
In May of 1994, our current pastor,
James McCartney, an Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship
leader and Seminary graduate, became the leader of the
new Calvary Bible Church. Under his leadership (and the
watchful care of our elders), our original core of about
5 people, Calvary has persevered through many major
transformations such as shedding our denominational ties
and becoming a young, contemporary, non-denominational
church connected to the Willow Creek Association and the
Purpose Driven Church movements.
Those changes, along with the guidance of the Scriptures
and the blessing of the Holy Spirit, have helped Calvary
grow from its original handful in 1994, to a crowd of
hundreds in 2008!
For several years, we were ‘one church’ meeting in ‘two
buildings’ and in ‘two services.’ We shared space with
the local public school (just a ½ a block from our
location) – allowing Calvary to take advantage of our
own church/office facilities as well as use the
auditorium and classrooms of the Jordan Road School on
the weekends as a part of our portable church
experiment.
After exploring options for growth by
looking at potential new properties and other space
sharing options we prayerfully prepared for our
church's future. Our most current plans include the
purchase and renovation of a property connected to our
church facility and the renovation/expansion of our
facility so that we may once again use it as our home
base for ministry and our potential multi-site church
locations. It is exciting! Check out the latest news on our Building Campaign here.
While we do not know all of what God
will do, it remains our prayer that God will use Calvary
Bible Church, it’s members and its ministers, to reach
thousands for Christ in our local community…and the
world!
